Sugar Skull: The Lensic Presents a Día de Muertos Arts Experience for Students and Teachers, Online

The Lensic is delighted to bring a new online performing arts experience to students in the Santa Fe area. Sugar Skull: A Día de Muertos Adventure is a Day of the Dead–themed on-demand educational module that will be available for teachers and their students between October 28 and November 6. In addition to a colorful 30-minute theater piece, the Sugar Skull program includes arts-and-crafts activities and a study guide with suggested discussion topics for classrooms.

“Providing performing arts education and engagement for students in our community is a fundamental part of our mission as a nonprofit performing arts center,” says Joel Aalberts, The Lensic’s executive director. “Despite the pandemic, we’re finding new ways to bring arts experiences to our schools. Sugar Skull is a fun, memorable program that celebrates this cultural tradition in a way teachers, students, and their families will enjoy.”

Sugar Skull is a theatrical production that celebrates Day of the Dead (or All Souls’ Day), the November 2 holiday observed in Mexico and beyond. The story follows Sugar Skull, a charismatic candy skeleton, as he follows the sounds of music in search of the party. He’s spurred on by the tricky Chaneques, who desperately want him to be the centerpiece on an ofrenda. Along the path, Sugar Skull meets many colorful characters who teach him how Day of the Dead is much more than a party — it is a celebration of life!
