On Repeat is our weekly rundown of what we’re listening to here at the Lensic. We’re music lovers and live for the joy of a great new track, the rediscovery of an old gem, the fateful chance of hearing just the right song at just the right time. We hope you find something you love. This week’s recommendations come from Executive Director Joel Aalberts.

Shawn Colvin, “This Must Be the Place”

Without a doubt, the main ingredients in American Utopia’s greatness are the iconic songs from David Byrne’s long solo career and as the leader of the Talking Heads. The anticipation of this Sunday’s screenings brought to mind this cover version of a Heads’ song by another Lensic favorite, Shawn Colvin (who last performed on our stage in 2007).

Justin Roberts, “Lemonade”

It’s the middle of July and, lord, is it hot outside! One of the best songs about the dog days is this sweet (and sour) family-friendly hit by Justin Roberts (who last performed at the Lensic in March 2019). “Lemonade” is a reminder of the pursuit of childhood riches, lasting friendships, and knowing you won’t feel as hot if you just move a little slower.

Terri Lyne Carrington and Social Science, “Purple Mountains”

Drummer and NEA Jazz Master Terri Lyne Carrington has played with icons including Dizzy Gillespie and Herbie Hancock. Her new band Social Science, however, is all about protest. For this collaboration with long-time bandmates Aaron Parks and Matthew Stevens, Carrington has added hip-hop MCs and R&B singers to explore the history of American injustice. Coming 9/17 as part of the NM Jazz Festival.

Myles Frost/MJ The Musical Cast, “Smooth Criminal”

At age 22, Myles Frost became one of the youngest Tony winners as he (moon)walked away from the June awards with a win for Best Leading Actor in a Musical for his role as Michael Jackson in MJ the Musical. The cast album was released last week and it’s lots of fun. But seeing Myles in action is the best. The voice. The moves. Kid’s got everything.
